Apparently my GTO decided that the cam and lifters were too tasty to pass up on. I can’t believe how pitted overy lobe and lifter are and how much wear through the hard face there is.

Doesn’t that happen when there is inadequate oiling?

How many miles in the engine? W hat oil and intervals have you been using? Looks almost like corrosion. Has the car ever sat for a while?

That’s probably going to require further disassembly. I’d be worried about all my bearings lookin g like that, if exposed to the same issue that caused the issue here .

Is this what happens when there’s not enough zinc in the oil?

Fuck dude, this is nightmare fuel. Did you maybe lose oil pressure or did a seized roller just send metal everywhere wrecking the rest? Are you thinking rebuild or junkyard LS?

I am not sure. Kind of thinking it might be too much lift for the heads. Not sure. Gonna have to rebuild it. Unless you know anyone that wants to gift me a LSA or LS9

6 5k on the car total. Been using Mobile 1 5w30 as required by GM every 5k miles. Well 2006-2015 the previous owner put 10k on it

Some of that just looks like shitty metallurgy. What make are the cam and lifters?

Call up Hinson and ask around. He does so many LS swaps, I bet he has some “take off” parts he might be able to sell you.
Not much help, sorry...but I can email him and ask. I know you’ve bought from him before.
Good luck!!

Is it all stock or did it have an aggressive cam installed at some point?

There’s your culprit. The PO probably let old oil sit in it, collecting water. The water and the acids it can form will slowly eat cast iron parts.

I need that too. I don’t really want to get into sales, but as an engineer, that is one of the few ways to make a shit ton of money. Plus, it would be good experience to have for when I start my own business.

Ouch, any idea how the bearings look? That’s a lot of metal to lose into the pan. Good that you caught it now though, rather than it going longer. Cams are case hardened, so once you start to wear into them, it gets worse fast.

Are all his lifters not skirted like mine (and the one on the left of his image)? I am assuming the lifter on the right in his image is a comparison lifter? Please ask because this well tell me what I am suspect of happening

He said all the other lifters looked like the one on the right. Was in a Corvette. He said it didn't have oil pressure one morning. The owner swapped the oil pump and when it restarted there was a loud tapping noise so they started tearing shit down and that's what they found.

I think it’s an issue generated by the aggressive intake lobes.
Comp themselves said that the LSK lobes are extremely hard on valvetrain and are not recomended for the street.
It is a Thunder Racing TRak cam

Old oil pump was seized imo with lifter bits.
New pump restored pressure but we were greeted by aggressive l ifter noise that was localized . Previously had the typical high lift lsx typewriter noise.
Pulled valve cover to reveal no preload on the pushrod with the flattened lifter

Ah with mine having the open wheel without the skirt we are thinking the opening for the wheel went passed the oil galley and would momentarily drop oil pressure. And at extended high RPM would exaggerate the situation. Isn’t the first time we’ve seen that happen.
